Zerand Platen Cutters offer the most precise and efficient die cutting available in the converting industry. Leading edge features include:

  • Precisely “Metering” the web into the cutting section. This is achieved by means of an ELS driven “Metering Roll” eliminating any need for gear changes
  • Starting and stopping the web entering into the cutting section: this is achieved by means of a swinging roller called “Moving Curved Plate” or “MCP” and an ELS controlled variable speed ‘Lower Feed Roll”, reducing retention points and surface scuffing.
  • Controlling and adjusting the “Print to Cut” register to a very accurate tolerance.
  • Creasing and Cutting evenly throughout the die cutting area: this is achieved by means of the exceptionally rigid construction and flat cutting area

ELS (Electric Line Shaft) Cutters

All Zerand cutters come standard with ELS on the lower feed roll and the metering roll.

The primary function of the lower feed roll drive system is to minimize the speed differential between the web and the driven lower feed roll while maintaining control of the web.

The lower feed roll is specially designed to operate with the drive system to reduce the overall roll and system inertia. While doing this, it also maintains liquid cooling capabilities for the lower feed roll and the servo-motor.

The ELS Metering Roll drive system provides accurate metering roll control for the web feed and registration control. The operator inputs the repeat length of the die layout and the system automatically feeds up the correct amount of web per cycle of the cutter, without the need of any gear change. The system also provides integration for the print to cut registration system.

ELS (Electric Line Shaft) Stripper

Once a carton has been precision-cut, the ELS Strippers efficiently remove the waste. Accurate waste removal without unnecessary, complex and time-consuming operations is ensured by belt transport of cartons through the strippers.

The stripper uses three servo-motors to drive the reciprocating nip cam, nip rolls, transport belt section and pin cylinders separately, while timed to the platen die cutter position. The reciprocating nip and pin cylinder may be independently adjusted while the platen die cutter is running, or while it is stationary.

Because displays are provided for readouts of the pin cylinder and nip timing relative to the platen die cutter, the user can reduce make-ready time and carton waste. To speed up the stripper changeover from one job to another, the pin cylinder and anvil roll chucking mechanisms use pneumatic cylinders to compress the chucking springs. Once the pin cylinders and anvil roll are in place, a flip of the selector switch will lock them there.

The strippers’ user-friendly, motorized adjustments deliver easy, precise performance. Predrilling the removable pin cylinder off-line allows you to reduce changeover time.
